The HUD-required Point in Time (P.I.T.) Count is a survey of the unhoused folks in a community. The P.I.T. Count takes place annually, with even years counting only the sheltered unhoused population and odd years counting both the sheltered and unsheltered unhoused. The count takes place all across the country and gathers data on where individuals spent the night of January 28th.
This year's count was one of the most robust efforts ever in Mesa County, thanks to coordinated collaboration between multiple local organizations, including Mutual Aid Partners, Veteran's Affairs, Hilltop, Food Bank of the Rockies, and Grand Valley Catholic Outreach. Over 7 days, a team of volunteers conducted the count throughout the Grand Valley.
The P.I.T. Count is vital for allocating funding to organizations who provide services for the unhoused population, giving lawmakers more representative data on the number of people experiencing houselessness in an area. Having an accurate count of houselessness in our community also raises awareness and creates an opportunity to advocate for neighbors who are facing housing inaccessibility.
As the lack of affordable housing has reached crisis levels, this year’s effort was critical to get an accurate estimate of how many unsheltered individuals reside in Mesa County, how much that population has grown and how many folks are living in unsafe conditions and need resources.
