As calls grow for the Resource Center to be closed down, the Grand Junction City Council is discussing options for its future.
The Resource Center has become one of the only safe places where people can go and exist without being harassed or asked to move, so the rhetoric from people in the community who want to see it closed down is scary for the community members who utilize the center daily.
The GJ Sentinel recently interviewed MAP's executive director, Stephania Vasconez:“All the positives, all the ground we’ve made in gaining trust and rebuilding trust after the closure of Whitman Park … these are people who have been disconnected from community, so this is a space where they can have that connection and have their basic needs met, and if this goes away, these folks will once again be defeated and discouraged and hopeless."
